Tumble dryers follow the washer extractors. Finishing Line Equipment: Flatwork Ironer and Linen Folder
If your business processes hotel bed linen, restaurant tablecloths, or any large flat items that must be delivered pressed and folded, you need a flatwork ironing line. This is where a meaningful portion of your capital investment goes, and it is where operators serving institutional clients differentiate themselves from self-service laundromats.
Flatwork ironers (also called calendar ironers) are roller-type ironing machines that pass flat items continuously through heated drums, producing a pressed finish at high throughput. Commercial flatwork ironers are rated in pieces per hour — typically 130–250 pieces per hour depending on the number of rollers and operating speed. The ironer takes items straight from the dryer (or sometimes from the washer, depending on linen type) and processes them continuously.
Linen folders are placed at the output end of the flatwork ironer. They fold large flat items automatically — bed sheets, duvet covers, tablecloths — and stack them for distribution. A linen folder is part of the flatwork ironing line: it is a downstream component of that line, and linen enters the folder directly from the ironer output. Linen feeders and spreaders are placed at the input end of the flatwork ironer. They help operators load crumpled, damp linen from the dryer into the ironer efficiently and without wrinkles. Manual feeders assist operators in presenting linen to the ironer feed slot. Automatic spreader-feeders use mechanical clamps to detect corners, spread the item, and feed it automatically — significantly reducing labor input per piece on the ironing line.
Not every operation needs a full flatwork ironing line. Self-service laundromats do not need ironers at all. Towels are not pressed. Ironing a towel would damage its texture and reduce its absorbency. Towels are washed, dried in a tumble dryer (often with a specific program to maintain loft and softness), and then folded. Folding is the final step, and for operations with significant towel volume, a dedicated towel folding machine is the appropriate equipment.
Towel folding machines are standalone equipment. They sit at the output of the tumble dryer — not at the output of the flatwork ironer. Operators feed individual towels into the machine, which folds them to a consistent size and stacks them. This is a completely different product category from linen folders, with different working widths, different mechanisms, and different throughput metrics (pieces per hour, not meters per minute).
A towel folding machine makes economic sense when daily towel volume is high enough that manual folding becomes a significant labor cost. Auxiliary Equipment: Steam, Water, Air, and Ventilation
Core processing machines need support infrastructure. This category is frequently underbudgeted in startup planning because the equipment is less visible than the main machines, but it is just as essential to production.
Steam boiler. If you are running steam-heated washers, dryers, or ironers — and in high-volume commercial laundry, steam heating is typically the most cost-efficient choice — you need a boiler sized to meet peak steam demand from all connected equipment simultaneously. Boiler sizing requires engineering input: undersizing creates performance problems across all steam-heated machines. Oversizing wastes capital and creates inefficiency at partial load. Get a proper heat load calculation done before specifying the boiler.
Water treatment. Hard water causes scale build-up in water-using equipment, reduces wash chemistry effectiveness, and shortens equipment life. Softening and filtration appropriate to local water quality is standard in commercial laundry. Some operations also benefit from water recycling systems that capture and reuse rinse water, reducing consumption and wastewater discharge costs.
Compressed air. Many commercial laundry machines — particularly larger washer extractors and automated ironing line components — require compressed air for pneumatic valve operation, door interlocks, and other functions. Confirm the compressed air requirements of every machine you are specifying and ensure your compressor capacity covers peak simultaneous demand.
Ventilation and exhaust. Tumble dryers and ironers generate significant heat and moisture. Without adequate exhaust capacity, the laundry becomes uncomfortably hot and humid, worker productivity drops, and drying efficiency decreases. Exhaust ductwork must be sized for the total heat and moisture output of all machines running simultaneously, and makeup air must be supplied to replace exhausted air.
Infrastructure Requirements That Are Often Missed
Equipment can only run if the facility can support it. These infrastructure requirements need to be confirmed — and in some cases upgraded — before equipment arrives on site.
Electrical capacity. Commercial laundry equipment draws substantial power. A mid-sized commercial laundry with multiple washers, dryers, and an ironing line may require a 200–400 kW electrical supply or more. Drainage. Washer extractors discharge large volumes of hot water during the drain phase of each cycle. Multiple machines draining simultaneously can exceed the capacity of undersized drainage systems, causing backup and operational delays. Drainage must be sized for peak simultaneous discharge and must be able to handle the water temperature.
Floor structure and loading. Industrial washer extractors during spin-extraction cycles create dynamic loads significantly higher than their static weight. Floor structure must be adequate for this. Small-scale OPL (on-premises laundry) — under 500 kg per day. This category covers small hotels (under 100 rooms), small aged care facilities, and similar single-site operations. Core equipment is typically 1–2 washer extractors in the 30–50 kg range, matching dryer capacity, and manual or semi-manual finishing processes. A flatwork ironer may or may not be justified depending on linen type and client expectations. A separate towel folding machine is rarely cost-effective at this volume — manual folding is usually more economical. Total equipment investment is typically in the range of USD 50,000–150,000 depending on specification and regional market.
Mid-size commercial laundry — 500 to 2,000 kg per day. This is the range for dedicated commercial laundry operations serving multiple hotel or institutional clients, or larger in-house laundries at major hotels and hospitals. Equipment typically includes multiple 50–100 kg washer extractors, matched dryer capacity, a full flatwork ironing line (ironer, feeder, folder) for flat items, and potentially a dedicated towel folding machine if towel volume warrants it. Auxiliary infrastructure — steam boiler, water treatment, compressed air, ventilation — is essential at this scale. Large central laundry — above 2,000 kg per day. Central laundry plants serving hotel groups, hospital networks, or regional linen rental operations require industrial-scale equipment: high-capacity washer extractors in the 100–120 kg range, industrial dryers, high-speed multi-roller flatwork ironers paired with automatic spreader-feeders, high-throughput linen folders, and potentially tunnel washers for very high volume. Planning Your Equipment List: Where to Start
Before contacting any equipment supplier, establish three things:
First, your daily linen volume by category — flat linen (bed sheets, tablecloths), towels, workwear, and any specialty items. Volume drives capacity requirements. Get this wrong and every equipment decision downstream is based on a flawed foundation.
